Investment Professional – VP or Principal (Tokyo Office)

  • Investment Team
  • Full-time
  • Tokyo, JP

Role Overview

We are actively hiring an Investment Professional (VP or Principal level) to join our Investment Team, dedicated to driving our Japan and regional APAC investing strategy. This is a rare opportunity to be the on-the-ground champion for one of our highest-priority geographies, working across DeepTech, FinTech and adjacent technology categories within Japan's rapidly evolving investment landscape.

Role Responsibilities

  • Build Deep Japan Market Expertise: Stay at the forefront of the technology and venture ecosystem in Japan: tracking regulatory developments, domestic market dynamics, and how Japanese enterprises (banks, asset managers, insurers, corporates) are adopting and investing in new technology. Develop a nuanced view of where global software and fintech trends intersect with Japan-specific needs and opportunities, and maintain a live perspective on the competitive and strategic landscape across relevant sectors.

  • Source Investment Opportunities in Japan: Proactively build and deepen relationships across the Japan venture and technology ecosystem. This means sustained engagement with Japanese VCs, CVCs, accelerators, universities (e.g. UTokyo, Keio, Osaka), government-affiliated incubators, and industry bodies. Build trusted access to leading Japanese founders, serial entrepreneurs, and spinouts from large corporates.

  • Cross-Border Deal Origination: Identify opportunities at the intersection of Japan and global markets, including US and Israeli companies seeking Japan market entry, and Japanese founders building globally relevant businesses. Leverage relationships with Japan-based corporates, trading houses (e.g. Mitsubishi, Sumitomo, Mitsui), and financial institutions as strategic partners and potential portfolio customers.

  • Evaluate Prospective Investments: Lead and support comprehensive due diligence on potential investments, including TAM analysis, business model assessment, financials, customer cohort analysis, and cap table/financial forecast modelling. Conduct technical and product reviews with particular sensitivity to how solutions localise or scale within Japanese enterprise and consumer environments.

  • Become a Thought Leader on Japan Tech & Venture: Develop a sharp, differentiated perspective on Japan's technology investment landscape. Identify greenfield investment opportunities shaped by Japan-specific dynamics, digital transformation of legacy industries, regulatory-driven innovation, demographic trends, and the internationalisation of Japanese tech. Build a public and industry presence as a credible voice on Japan venture.

  • Manage and Add Value to Portfolio Companies: Serve as primary point of contact and board representative for Japan-based or Japan-focused portfolio companies. Actively support portfolio growth through business development introductions (particularly into Japan's major financial institutions, keiretsu networks, and corporates), talent sourcing, and strategic guidance on navigating the Japan market.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Deep Japan Network: Established, trusted relationships within Japan's technology, financial services, and investment ecosystem. This includes connections with domestic VCs and CVCs, major financial institutions (megabanks, regional banks, asset managers, insurers), large corporates and trading houses, government bodies (METI, FSA), and the Japan startup and founder community. The strength and relevance of this network is a primary selection criterion.

  • Japan Investment Experience: Prior investment experience in Japan private markets is required. Candidates should have a track record of sourcing, evaluating, or executing transactions in Japan, with a working understanding of Japan-specific deal dynamics, LP/GP relationships, and corporate culture.

  • Language: Native or business-level Japanese proficiency is required. English fluency preferred.

  • Passion for Technology & Venture: Genuine enthusiasm for enterprise software, fintech, and adjacent technology categories — with an understanding of how these sectors are evolving in Japan relative to global markets. Experience across verticals including financial services, insurance, retail, manufacturing, or healthcare is valued.

  • Relevant Sector Network: Meaningful relationships with banks, asset managers, insurers, FinTechs, and corporates across Japan (and ideally the broader Asia region including Singapore) that are relevant to sourcing deals and supporting portfolio companies.

  • Investment Experience: Background in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, or operating roles (Product Management, BD/Sales, Corp Dev/Finance). Prior investment experience required. VPs will have at least 2–4 years of investment experience; Principals will have 4–6 years with a meaningful attributable track record including board experience.

  • Cultural Alignment: Alignment with Fin Capital's values — collaborative, high-integrity, merit-driven, and no ego or entitlement. Comfort operating across cultures and time zones, bridging Japanese and Western business environments.

  • Self-Starter: Genuinely intellectually curious, detail-oriented, and excited about building something enduring in one of the world's most strategically important technology markets.
